Satellite Healthcare Celebrates National Kidney Month through Storytelling, Educational Outreach

Mar 12, 2015

SAN JOSE, CA — March 12, 2015 — Satellite Healthcare, a leading national not-for-profit provider of kidney dialysis services and funder of kidney research, announced today the launch of a comprehensive online community education campaign in observance of National Kidney month in March and World Kidney Day March 12.

More than 26 million Americans – one in 10 – suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease, and nearly half a million undergo regular dialysis treatment for kidney failure. Being aware of the signs of kidney disease, which often go unnoticed, can lead to early detection and delay or even prevent the onset of the disease.

“Satellite is dedicated to educating the public not only during National Kidney Month but year-round, because unfortunately, many people simply don’t know the important function their kidneys serve or what factors lead to the development of kidney disease,” said Dr. Brigitte Schiller, chief medical officer for Satellite Healthcare. “We know from decades of research and experience that knowledge truly is power when it comes to kidney disease.”

Satellite has redesigned and relaunched www.KidneysDoThat.org, an interactive user-friendly online resource that provides kidney information, interviews, tips, healthy recipes, a listing of events hosted by a variety of kidney organizations, and more. To highlight this year’s World Kidney Day theme of “Kidney Health for All,” the site will feature an engaging and inspiring Kidney Stories series that explores the personal impact of the disease and dialysis treatment through a wide variety of candid first-person reflections from people with kidney disease, their family members, and the medical professionals who care for them.

Robert Marcus of Milpitas, Calif., who shares his story, says he was in denial when his doctor urged him to go to classes about treatment for kidney disease. “I have type 2 diabetes, but since I felt great I didn’t think I needed to learn about dialysis. Then it hit me pretty bad.” Since starting dialysis Marcus and his wife Susan have found they can again do all the things they used to do, including going on frequent cruises. “He can still be active. It’s such a blessing,” says Susan Marcus. Hong Nguyen, a nurse who provides care for Marcus, explains why she chose to specialize in kidney care. “I came to dialysis for one main reason – I want to make a miracle happen. Dialysis made me realize that I can watch that miracle happen. Kidney failure is not a death sentence. I can prolong patients’ lives.”

Satellite is also engaging patients at its more than 70 centers nationwide, as well as the local communities, in a variety of educational events throughout March. Committed to educating and giving back throughout the year, in 2015 Satellite will sponsor and take part in numerous Kidney Walks held by the National Kidney Foundation; provide more than a million dollars in grants to fund innovative research through its Norman S. Coplon Extramural Grant Program; and donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to the National Kidney Foundation, American Kidney Foundation, and American Society of Nephrology.
