Clinical Staff of WellBound Home Dialysis Center in Lafayette to
Participate in National Kidney Foundation “Kidney Walk”

Lafayette, IN, June 3, 2008 – Katherine Velasquez, CNN has spent her entire professional life providing dialysis services to people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).  For the past two years, she has been the Nurse Manager of WellBound in Lafayette, a Satellite Healthcare Company, where an innovative approach to dialysis care emphasizes patient education, wellness instruction and home dialysis options. 

Ms. Velasquez, and several of her colleagues at WellBound, will strap on their walking shoes this weekend to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) through the “Kidney Walk” taking place at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis on June 7.

“We all have spent so many years with our patients and their families that they seem like part of our family,” Ms. Velasquez said.  “We’re doing this walk not for us, but to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana.  We’ve gotten our friends to sponsor us by pledging a certain amount of dollars per mile walked, and the proceeds will help NKF in its valuable work, educating people about kidney disease and promoting kidney organ donations for those who need transplants.”

The Kidney Walk not only raises money for NKF, it helps to raise the public’s awareness of chronic kidney disease which affects more than 26 million Americans, with another 20 million having risk factors for developing the disease.  As the NKF Web site states, “The NKF’s Kidney Walk presents an occasion for dialysis patients, organ transplant recipients, donor families, living donors, the medical communities, and the general public to celebrate LIFE and support the Foundation’s mission.”

NKF walk participants will not have to worry about being thirsty; WellBound has also sponsored water bottles at stations along the walk.  “We want to make a splash at the Kidney Walk, and this is one way to do it,” she said. “It’s going to be great fun, and we encourage all those who can to come and join us.”  Potential walkers can sign up at http://walk.kidney.org/
