Special kidney health resources offered online and locally at Satellite Healthcare dialysis centers

San Jose, CA - March 10, 2014 — Satellite Healthcare, among the nation's leading not-for-profit providers of kidney dialysis and related services, announced today its ongoing support for World Kidney Day and its expanded efforts to promote kidney health throughout March, in observance of National Kidney Month. World Kidney Day 2014 is slated for March 13.

The mission of World Kidney Day is to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health, and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide. This year’s theme is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and aging.

“There is an age-related decline in kidney function. As the global population ages, we see kidney disease becoming more and more common,” said Dr. Brigitte Schiller, chief medical officer for Satellite Healthcare. “However, not all individuals will develop CKD with advancing age. Some will develop symptoms as a complication from other ailments. Early detection and treatment is vital to slow the progression of kidney disease, prevent complications and help individuals live longer, healthier lives.”

Satellite Healthcare has been educating and treating the elderly and others with kidney disease throughout the company’s 40-year history. “In support of World Kidney Day 2014, we are asking the general population, but especially our older relatives and friends, to love their kidneys and to be aware of the signs of CKD,” said Kim Hernandez, director of brand and marketing communications at Satellite Healthcare.

Satellite Healthcare sponsors kidney health information year-round, a user-friendly online resource for kidney awareness, tips and recipes. Throughout National Kidney Month, Satellite Healthcare’s dialysis centers nationwide will also offer posters emphasizing the prevalence of kidney disease to local businesses, for display in shop windows or within the workplace. Posters are available at each of the more than 60 Satellite Healthcare locations or for download at

Satellite Healthcare has also launched the “My CKD Journey” story campaign for patients, staff, family and friends to share how they have been affected by CKD. My CKD Journey stories are written on kidney-shaped note cards, which will be displayed at dialysis centers throughout March. Everyone is welcome to read excerpts from the stories later in the year at
