Setting Goals for the New Year

3, 2, 1… Happy New Year! As we begin to embark on another trip around the sun, many of us are setting a few resolutions and goals for the months ahead – many of them have to do about eating better and getting more exercise. Still, life with CKD means that these goals and aspirations can look a bit different.

Here are a few tips to help make 2021 your best year yet while you manage your condition.

Set Realistic Goals

Life with CKD means frequent doctors’ appointments; perhaps a regular dialysis treatment; and extra attention to what you eat and drink. That’s a lot to manage. That’s why it’s important to set realistic and manageable goals. Rather than making a long list of goals for the year ahead, set several smaller goals that work into your lifestyle.

Involve Your Loved Ones

When people come together to meet a common goal, it makes it easier to follow through. Whether you know other living with CKD or just want to involve your loved ones, set a shared goal that’s good for everyone. From sticking to a kidney-friendly diet to getting more exercise, having a friend along for the ride can make it easier to find success.

Be Patient With Yourself

Accept that there may be moments where you may fall short of your plan. Be kind to yourself. Take a moment to reflect and acknowledge how far you’ve come. Remember, you can always pick up where you left off and try again!
